When building a flight simulator, you can either go for a full featured cockpit with all knobs, buttons, switches, dials and displays implemented in hardware, or use Virtual Reality (VR). The first case gives you the most realistic impression of flying an aircraft, but it requires a lot of work and money, as well as an elaborate monitor display system for best immersion. And it will provide you with exactly one type of aircraft (or a few with similar layout). With VR, on the other hand, you can fly any aircraft the simulation software can generate. However, even in VR you will need a few things in hardware, in order to properly control the craft. Mainly these are a yoke (or stick, depending on the type of aircraft), throttle and rudder pedals.
I replaced the original rudder board with one made from a 21mm plywood screen printing plate, with 8mm slots to adjustably mount my rudder pedals, and a rectangular hole for the cables.
Rounded the edges and spray painted the sides black.
Added two brackets on the bottom for centering it on the cradle's front arm, and a clamp to hold the cables..
The rudder board mounted to the cradle's front arm.
I used aluminium [1] profiles [2] to build a frame that holds the yoke and throttle, and also supports a monitor for configuring and running programs.
The profiles are connected with angle connectors [3], and the ends are covered with plastic [4] caps [5].
The 40x80mm profile is connected to the rudder plate, which makes the whole thing rock solid.
A piece of 9mm plywood (which will be painted dark gray) forms the "desktop"....
...on which yoke, throttle and other things like keyboard and trackball can be mounted.
The monitor is held in place by a mounting bracket [6] with extra holes drilled into it to match the 40mm distance of the notches in the vertical aluminium profile.
