Full Motion Flight Simulation PlatformGraphics display
To give the pilot a fully immersed flying sensation it is very important
that he does not have any visual contact to the "real world". To avoid
having to build a completely closed cockpit, I am planning on using
a "Head Mounted Display" (HMD).
One problem with using an HMD like the VFX-1 from Interactive Imaging Systems
is that this device tracks the head movements by using the earth's magnetic
field. Since the pilot is going to be moved with the platform, there would
be "virtual" head movements detected by the HMD. A possible solution to
overcome this problem would be to mount a magnetic coil somewhere near the
pilot's head, which emits a magnetic field that is strong enough to override
the natural magnet field. Maybe the VFX-1's sensitivity can be adjusted to
react only on the stronger magnetic field? Since I don't yet have an HMD,
I have no idea if this would be a useful solution. Therefore I'd appreciate
if someone owning a VFX-1 could do some experiments to clarify this.
